Pismo Beach is a small Central Coast town on Highway 101, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It is a beach-and-food stop rather than a sightseeing city: the pier, the dunes you can drive on, the winter monarch grove and a bowl of clam chowder are the core. Two nights covers it; three if you use it as a base for San Luis Obispo, wine country and Hearst Castle.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread along Highway 101 and Highway 1 and buses are infrequent. Downtown, the pier and the beach are walkable in 10–15 min. SLO RTA routes 21 and 24 run within the city and route 10 links San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Arroyo Grande and Santa Maria. A free beach trolley connects Port San Luis, Avila Beach, Shell Beach and the Pismo Beach outlets on Fridays–Sundays, April–October (check the season).
