Pirongia
Half a day or a short stop: hike Mount Pirongia, then move on. One night only if you want an early start on the trail.
Pirongia is a small village 30 km south of Hamilton at the base of Mount Pirongia. Its reason to stop is the Pirongia Forest Park – a day‑hike up the mountain with views across the Waikato. The village itself has a pub, a couple of cafes and a small info centre. Most travellers use it as a lunch break or a trailhead, not a base.

- No petrol station in Pirongia; fill up in Hamilton or Te Awamutu.
- Cell reception is patchy on the mountain; download the DOC map before you go.
Very safe. The main risk is on the mountain: slippery trails, sudden weather changes and limited cell reception. Tell someone your route and carry a torch.
