Pirenópolis is an 18th-century gold town in Goiás, 107 km from Goiânia and about 150 km from Brasília, with a preserved centre of stone streets, three slave-built churches and a June festival, the Cavalhadas. The town itself is a half day on foot; the waterfalls and the Serra dos Pireneus need a car, a tour or a lot of walking. Two nights covers both. It is a weekend and holiday destination for Brazilians, so beds and restaurant tables fill fast on Fridays, long weekends and in June.
