Piran
Stay 2 nights in the old town: walk the walls and St George's at opening, swim off the piers at 17:00, then eat one street back from the waterfront.
Piran is a small Venetian-style peninsula town on Slovenia's 47 km of coast, about 2 h 15 min by bus from Ljubljana and 20 min from Koper. Two nights covers the walls, the church hill, the aquarium and a swim; one night is enough if you only want the square and a sunset. Cars stay outside the old town, so you arrive on foot and everything is within a 30-minute walk.

Get around
On foot: the peninsula is about 30 minutes end to end. A free shuttle bus runs along the coast between Piran and Portorož via Bernardin, stopping near Tartini Square. Buses link Piran with Izola and Koper (about 20 min) and Trieste (about 1 h). No trains; the nearest station is Koper. Cars are not allowed in the old town.

Scams and watch-outs
- Parking is the main cost: about €17–24 per day at the Fornače and Arze garages, with a free shuttle to Tartini Square.
- The city walls and bell tower have steep, narrow, uneven steps: not for small children or anyone unsteady on their feet.
- There is no sandy beach; you swim from concrete piers and rocks, so bring shoes for the water.
- Restaurants on the waterfront share near-identical menus and prices; one street back is usually cheaper.
- Summer midday heat on the stone is strong: shift sightseeing to early morning and evening.
Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are slippery pier and wall steps, summer heat on stone, and swimmers' ear from the harbour. Keep an eye on your bag in the packed July–August square.
