Piqua
Stop for half a day off I-75: Fort Piqua Plaza, the old nuclear plant site and a bike-path ride. Sleep in Dayton or Troy, not here.
Piqua is a small Ohio river town on the Great Miami, 25 mi (40 km) north of the I-70/I-75 junction and about 30 min from Dayton. It has one real sight cluster downtown, a decommissioned municipal nuclear plant that is now city offices, and a paved trail network that links to Troy. Most travellers see it in half a day between Dayton and Sidney, or use it as a cheap bed on a long I-75 drive.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: downtown sights are 1–2 mi apart and sidewalks are sparse outside the centre. The P.A.T.H. path runs east–west through town and joins the Rivers Edge Trail south to Troy, so a bike covers the river corridor well. No local bus worth planning around.
See and do
Known for
- Fort Piqua Plaza
- Piqua Nuclear Generating Station (first municipal nuclear plant, now city offices)
- Rivers Edge Trail and the P.A.T.H. bike path

- East Ash Street (Piqua Center area)
- Highway-side motels and the Comfort Inn by the former mall; free parking, 5-min drive to downtown.
- Downtown / North Main Street
- A handful of small places near Fort Piqua Plaza and the river; walkable to dinner, thin choice.
- Troy or Dayton (base elsewhere)
- Troy is 15 min south with more beds; Dayton 30 min south with the full range. Better value than Piqua for a night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The nuclear plant site is city offices, not a museum: no tours, no visitor entry — view it from outside only.
- Trail sections flood or ice over after heavy rain or a freeze; check conditions before riding.
- Downtown is quiet after about 21:00; most food and drink is on Main Street and Water Street.
- Distances on foot are longer than they look on a map — drive between downtown and the Ash Street strip.
Low-risk small town; the real hazards are highway driving, deer at dusk on US-36 and I-75, and unlit trail sections after dark.
