Pinole
Skip Pinole as a base unless you are visiting family or want cheap motels: one half-day for the bayfront trail and Old Town, then move on.
Pinole is a small Contra Costa County suburb on San Pablo Bay, 30–40 minutes by bus from the El Cerrito del Norte BART station. It has a short bayfront trail, a compact Old Town with a few restaurants, and motels that undercut San Francisco and Berkeley rates. There is no reason to build a Bay Area trip around it, but it works as a cheap bed or a half-day stop between Richmond and Martinez.

Get around
WestCAT buses cover Pinole and Hercules, with Route J running about twice an hour from El Cerrito del Norte BART seven days a week. Sidewalks are consistent in the main parts of town, and a completed Bay Trail segment links Pinole to Hercules on foot or by bike. A car makes the motel strip and Fitzgerald Drive far easier.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Amtrak trains pass through but do not stop in Pinole; there is no station.
- Weekend WestCAT service starts later and ends earlier than weekdays: check the last bus before an evening return.
- Motels on the highway strip are car-oriented; walking to dinner from some is unpleasant after dark.
A low-crime residential suburb; the real issues are car break-ins on the highway motel strip and unlit stretches of the bayfront trail after dark. Walk the trail in daylight.
