Give Pingdingshan one full day for the city parks and museum, or two if you add Yaoshan and the Spring Temple Buddha; it is an industrial city, not a sightseeing base.
Pingdingshan is a coal city of about 4.9 million people in central Henan, named after a flat-topped hill inside the urban area. Its own streets hold a museum, a canal park and a hilltop view; the real draws — Yaoshan, the Spring Temple Buddha, Fengxue Temple and the Yexian yamen — sit 40–90 km out in Lushan, Ruzhou and Ye County. Come for one or two nights as a stop on a Henan loop, not as a destination on its own.

Scams and watch-outs
- Pingdingshan West high-speed station is in Baofeng County, roughly 30 min and ¥40 by taxi from the centre — do not plan a tight connection.
- Summer is hot and wet: July and August carry the year's heaviest rain, with thunderstorms and occasional flooding.
- Winter days are cold and dry with a wide day–night gap; snow is possible.
- Rafting on Yaoshan runs May–October only, and the ice and snow festival December–February; both are seasonal, so confirm before travelling out.
- Mobile payment (Alipay or WeChat Pay) is near-universal; set it up before you arrive, since shared bikes and many small vendors take nothing else.
The practical risks are summer heat and heavy July–August rain, long taxi runs to the out-of-town sights, and payment: almost nothing takes cash-free payment except Alipay or WeChat Pay, so set one up before you arrive.
