Pinawa
Give Pinawa one full day plus one night: suspension bridge and channel walk in the morning, dam ruins after lunch, beach or golf in the afternoon.
Pinawa is a hamlet of about 1,300 people on the Winnipeg River, 110 km north-east of Winnipeg and one of the west-side gates into Whiteshell Provincial Park. It was built in 1963 as a planned community for the Whiteshell Laboratories nuclear research site, so the riverfront stayed public reserve. Come for water, trails and the dam ruins, not for a city break.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport from Winnipeg: without a car you are dependent on a taxi or a lift, and the drive is about 1 h 30 min.
- Wildlife is real: deer on the roads at dusk, and black bears around trails and bins. Store food inside, not in a tent.
- The suspension bridge is 1 m wide and 54 m long: one person at a time in places, and it can be icy in winter.
- The beach lifeguard is on duty only 1–5 PM, 1 July–31 August; outside that you swim at your own risk.
- Cell coverage is patchy on trails and at the dam ruins; download an offline map before you leave town.
Pinawa is a small, quiet community and violent crime is rare. The real risks are wildlife, cold water, winter ice and the 1 h 30 min drive on dark highways with deer.
