Pinal de Amoles
Go for 1–2 nights as a Sierra Gorda base: mission churches, forest hikes and a waterfall. Skip if you have no car or no time for a 3 h 45 min bus.
Pinal de Amoles is a small Pueblo Mágico at about 2,300 m in the Sierra Gorda of eastern Querétaro, on the MEX-120 between Querétaro and Jalpan. The town itself is a plaza, a church and a museum; the reason to come is the surrounding biosphere reserve, the Río Escanela hikes and the five Franciscan missions of the Sierra Gorda, a UNESCO site. A car or a hired taxi is what makes the region work.

Get around
The centre is walkable but steep and cobbled; a maze of lanes wraps around the hills. For Puente de Dios, El Chuveje, Cuatro Palos or the missions you need a car, a taxi or a tour. Taxis wait at a sitio beside the Plaza Principal; agree the fare and the return pickup before you leave town.

Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude about 2,300 m: take the first day easy if you came straight from sea level.
- Mountain roads are foggy and slick in the rainy season; drive MEX-120 in daylight.
- Trail sites take cash only and guides hurry groups through Puente de Dios at busy times.
- The Flecha Amarilla stop on MEX-123 is a roadside halt, not a station: no ticket office, no baggage service.
- El Quirambal is unrestored and unmaintained; do not expect a developed archaeological site.
The town is calm and the main risks are the mountain road, altitude and trail conditions, not crime. Keep to daylight driving, carry cash for trail fees, and tell your hotel where you are hiking.
