Pilisvörösvár
Skip as a base: it is a 30–40 min commuter hop from Budapest with one gallery and a few chapels. Come only for the Pilis forest trails or a cheap bed.
Pilisvörösvár is a small town of about 14,000 people 18 km north-west of Budapest, on the Esztergom rail line and Highway 10. It holds one of Hungary's larger German (Swabian) minority communities, a handful of chapels and a local-history park, but almost no conventional sightseeing. Its real use is as a cheap, quiet base for the Pilis hills and the Danube Bend, or a half-day trip out of Budapest.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 30 minutes. Local buses and the Budapest suburban bus lines (64, 64A, 164, 264, 218) link the centre, Solymár and the Hűvösvölgy and Óbuda ends of Budapest. Trains on the Esztergom–Budapest line stop at Pilisvörösvár and Solymár stations. A car helps for the Pilis trailheads and for reaching Visegrád or Esztergom.
