The Pilbara is 507,896 sq km — bigger than California — with about 62,000 people, most of them in mining towns and ports. You cannot see it without a car and you cannot see it in a day. Fly into Karratha for Karijini, Murujuga and Dampier; fly into Port Hedland for the port, the turtles and the eastern approach. Karijini is roughly a five-hour drive from Karratha, so treat it as its own overnight stop, not a day trip from the coast.
