Piha
Go for one night, or as a day trip from Auckland: 45–60 min by car, swim only between the flags, and leave before dark if you are not sleeping here.
Piha is a black-sand surf beach and a village of a few hundred people on Auckland's west coast, about an hour's drive from the city. Lion Rock splits the beach in two. The surf is strong and rips are real, so the trip is about walking, watching and eating, not long swims. One night is enough; a day trip works if you have a car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Swim only between the flags when lifeguards are on patrol; rips are strongest on the outgoing tide.
- North Piha has tidal rips and holes: it is not a swimming beach for visitors.
- No fuel, no ATM and limited groceries in the village: fill up and bring cash in Auckland.
- The drive over the ranges is narrow and often wet: allow more time than the map suggests.
The beach is the risk, not the village. Swim between the flags with lifeguards on patrol, keep off the rocks at high swell, and do not drive the ranges road tired or after dark if you can avoid it.
