Pietrapertosa
Go for one night, two if you ride the Flight of the Angel: a 1,088 m village of rock stairways, 40 min by bus from Potenza.
Pietrapertosa is a small mountain village in the Lucanian Dolomites, in Basilicata, built into sandstone rock at 1,088 m and looking across the valley to Castelmezzano. It is a half-day of walking plus one big activity: the Flight of the Angel zipline between the two villages. Sleep one night here, or use it as a day trip from Potenza or Matera if you have a car.

Get around
On foot. The village is a stack of stairways and alleys cut into rock; a car is only useful for arriving and for day trips. Renna buses link Pietrapertosa with Potenza several times a day (check the current timetable).
