Give Pictou one night, two at most: the waterfront, the Hector replica and the county's brown-sauce pizza fit in a half day, and the PEI ferry is 5 km away.
Pictou is a 3,200-person harbour town on Nova Scotia's Northumberland Shore, the landing point of the 1773 ship Hector and the self-styled birthplace of New Scotland. Downtown is walkable end to end in about 2 km, the museums sit on one quay, and the reason most travellers stop is the seasonal ferry to Prince Edward Island at Caribou, 5 km north. Come for a night between Halifax and the island, or as a slower base for county beaches.
