Picton is a town of about 4,300 people at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, and the South Island terminal for the Cook Strait ferries. Almost everyone passes through; the question is whether to add a night for the sounds. The town itself is a 20-minute walk end to end, so a ferry night plus one full day on the water is the usual shape. Beyond the waterfront, the sound is reached by boat or on foot, not by road.

No local bus. The centre is flat and walkable in 15–20 minutes; taxis cover Waikawa Bay and the ferry terminal. Water taxis leave from Picton Town Wharf on London Quay for the sound, the Queen Charlotte Track and lodges.

A small, quiet town and one of the safer places in New Zealand. The real risks are the water and the roads: cold sound water, no lifeguards on most beaches, and tired driving on SH1 or the winding Queen Charlotte Drive.
