Skip as a base unless you are visiting family: Pickering is a Toronto suburb on the GO Lakeshore East line, 35 min from Union. Stay only if you need cheap parking and a lakefront walk.
Pickering is a suburban city of about 92,000 people directly east of Toronto on Highway 401, part of Durham Region. It has a lakefront village at Frenchman's Bay, a living-history museum, a big indoor pedestrian bridge and a nuclear station. Almost nobody comes here as a destination: you come for a specific reason, a family visit, a cheaper hotel with parking, or a stop on the Waterfront Trail. Toronto's sights are a GO train ride away.

Get around
Durham Region Transit buses cover the city; the cash fare is about $3.75 (check). GO Transit's Lakeshore East train runs from Pickering GO to Toronto Union in about 35 min, seven days a week, and GO buses connect to Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. A car is much easier for the museum village, the north of the city and the 401. Taxis are local firms; there is no rideshare guarantee outside the core.

- The nuclear station has a public information centre but no general public tours; check before you go.
- Winter lakefront wind off Lake Ontario is brutal; the boardwalk is not a winter walk.
Pickering is a low-crime Toronto suburb and safe for tourists. The real risks are driving: the 401 through here is fast, crowded and unforgiving, and winter lake-effect snow squalls close it without much warning.
