Phongsali
Go only if you are already in northern Laos and want a quiet town with no sightseeing checklist: one night covers it, and the bus in is the main event.
Phongsali is a small town in northern Laos and the only practical way in is the local bus, which runs from Boun Neau about 40 km west, usually in the afternoon, for 15,000 kip and just over an hour. The bus station sits about 2 km from town and tuk-tuks meet arrivals at 8,000 kip per person. Guesthouses start around 50,000 kip a night and few staff speak English. The tourism information centre is well signed, its staff speak good English, and opening hours are limited: call the number on the sign and they will come to your guesthouse outside hours. Wikivoyage lists no See, Do, Eat or Drink sections for the town, so treat Phongsali as a base and a stop, not a sightseeing destination. One night is enough; add nights only if you arrange something locally. River transport from Muang Khua ended when a dam was built (as of July 2017).
