Phoenix public transport: tickets, passes and apps

The system is small enough that most visitors never need a monthly pass. Light rail runs a single line through downtown Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, with buses filling some gaps. If your plans are Scottsdale resorts, golf, or the outer suburbs, a pass is the wrong purchase: plan on a rental car or ride-hailing instead.

Route numbers, hours and journey times should all be checked before you commit.

If you are staying downtown or in Tempe, a ride-hailing run from the airport is often the fastest way to reach the light rail, and then a pass covers the rest of your stay. If you are staying in Scottsdale or a resort area, skip the transit pass entirely and arrange a car.

Summer heat changes how you use transit. Waiting for a bus at 15:00 in July is unpleasant, so time trips for early morning or evening and keep water with you. Also check service hours: many routes stop earlier than you would expect, and late-night coverage is thin.
