Philadelphia airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Four ways cover almost every arrival: the SEPTA Airport Line train, a taxi, a ride-hailing car, and the local bus. The train wins on cost and traffic-proof timing; a car wins on luggage, groups and late-night arrivals.

The Airport Line is a regional rail service that stops at all PHL terminals and runs into Center City, with the main downtown stops at 30th Street Station, Suburban Station and Jefferson Station. Journey time is about 25–30 minutes. Trains are roughly every 30 minutes, with a thinner service late at night and at weekends — check the last departure if you land after about 23:00.

Buy a ticket at the station machine or in the SEPTA app before boarding; fare is about US$8 one way (2026 estimate). From 30th Street Station you can walk, take the Market–Frankford Line subway, or pick up a taxi to your hotel. If your hotel is near Suburban or Jefferson Station, stay on the train and skip the transfer.

The train is the only option that ignores traffic. It is also the easiest arrival if you are heading onward by Amtrak, since 30th Street Station is the Northeast Corridor hub.

Taxis wait on the arrivals curb at each terminal; the trip to Center City is about 20–30 minutes off-peak and roughly US$35–50 plus tip (2026 estimate). Philadelphia taxis have historically used a flat airport-to-Center City rate — check the posted rate at the stand, since it changes.

Uber and Lyft pick up from signed zones at the terminals; follow the app's directions to the correct door. Expect about US$35–55 off-peak, more with surge pricing at peak times or in bad weather. Both are the sensible choice if you land after the last train, are travelling with children or heavy bags, or are splitting the fare between two or more people.

Tipping follows US norms: 15–20% for taxis and ride-hailing, added in the app for the latter.

SEPTA bus 37 connects the airport with the Broad and Snyder area south of Center City, where you transfer to the Broad Street Line subway for the ride downtown. Total time is roughly 45–60 minutes and the fare is about US$2.50 (2026 estimate), paid with a SEPTA Key card, contactless card or exact cash — check what the bus accepts before boarding.

This is the cheapest route but the slowest and least convenient with luggage. It makes sense only in daylight with time to spare, or if your destination is already in South Philadelphia. For most visitors the Airport Line train costs a few dollars more and saves a transfer.

Budget about US$8 per person for the train, about US$2.50 for the bus, and US$35–55 for a taxi or ride-hailing car to Center City before tip. All figures are 2026 estimates and can change; check the operator's current fare before you travel.

Allow extra time in rush hour: the drive from PHL to Center City can take twice as long between roughly 07:00–09:30 and 16:00–18:30. The train is unaffected.

If you are continuing to New York, Washington or Boston, 30th Street Station is where Amtrak's Northeast Corridor stops — the Airport Line drops you there directly, so you can skip a separate taxi across town.

Buy a SEPTA Key card or use contactless payment if you plan to use buses and the subway during your stay; single rides are also available. Check current fare rules, as the system has been changing.

For late-night arrivals, arrange the ride before you land and confirm the pickup zone in the app; terminal pickup points are signposted but not always obvious.
