Petrolina

Petrolina is the largest city and business centre of the São Francisco Valley, a semi-arid sertão region made fertile by river irrigation. It exports grapes, mangos and bananas and is a growing wine and sparkling-wine producer. The city has the region's only international airport, its best hotels and its widest restaurant range, but few sights: a neo-gothic cathedral, a derelict heritage street and a flat riverfront. Most travellers use it as a base for winery visits in Lagoa Grande and Casa Nova, or cross the bridge to Juazeiro in Bahia.

Get around
Petrolina is flat and cycling is easy outside peak sun; segregated paths run along the Orla and on Av. Monsenhor Ângelo Sampaio and Av. da Integração Airton Senna. Walking is limited by heat and shade, so keep it to short hops in the centre. Taxis are not easy to hail on the street; use e-hailing apps (Uber and the local Central Valle Táxi). Rent a car only for agro- and enotourism — agencies at the airport and in the centre, from about R$150 per day (2026 estimate).

Scams and watch-outs
- Heat: daytime walking is hard; carry water and shift sightseeing to early morning and late afternoon.
- Regular taxis charge Bandeira 2 at night, in December, on Sundays and public holidays, and on trips to Juazeiro — both directions.
- The Concha Acústica next to the cathedral is best avoided when no event is on.
- Petrolina Antiga (Rua Barbosa Lima) is largely abandoned and vandalised; go in daylight only.
- Long bus rides: about 10 h to Recife, about 500 km to Salvador; the bus terminal bathroom charges a fee.
- Distances between valley wineries are long and rural — do not plan them on foot.
The everyday hazard is heat: daytime walking is hard, so carry water and shift sightseeing to early morning and late afternoon. Two named spots are best avoided — the Concha Acústica beside the cathedral when no event is on, and the abandoned Petrolina Antiga (Rua Barbosa Lima), which is a daylight-only look. Regular taxis add Bandeira 2 at night, in December, on Sundays and holidays, and on cross-river trips to Juazeiro.
