Petra airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Petra has no airport of its own, so every route runs through Amman or Aqaba and ends in Wadi Musa. Coaches are cheapest and comfortable but run to a fixed morning schedule. Private cars cost more and go door to door at whatever hour you land. Minibuses are the local budget option and only leave when full. Renting a car gives you the King's Highway stops on the way, at the price of driving in Jordanian traffic.

Whichever you pick, the last leg is the same: the road climbs from the desert highway into Wadi Musa, and hotels, the visitor centre and the site entrance all sit within a few minutes of each other.

Most travellers land at Queen Alia, about 30–40 minutes south of central Amman. From the airport you have two clean choices. The first is to go into Amman, sleep, and take the morning JETT coach to Petra the next day — the coach leaves once daily from the Abdali office and takes 3–3.5 hours. Book a day ahead in high season, and note the return bus leaves Petra in the mid-afternoon.

The second is to push straight through. A pre-booked private transfer or taxi from the airport to Wadi Musa takes roughly 2.5–3 hours (check) and costs in the region of JOD 80–130 per vehicle; agree the price and any stops before you get in. Hotel-arranged transfers sit in the same band. If you land after about 15:00, the straight-through option gets you to Wadi Musa in the dark with nothing to see that day — the Amman overnight is the better use of the money.

A hire car from the airport is the flexible middle path: JOD 25–45 a day plus fuel, and you can break the drive at Madaba or Kerak on the King's Highway. Carry your passport and rental papers; there are police checkpoints on the desert highway.

King Hussein International Airport sits 15 minutes from Aqaba town and is the closer airport to Petra, about 130 km north (check). Flights here are mostly seasonal and low-cost from Europe, and the Aqaba special economic zone offers a free visa on arrival for some stays — check the current rules before you book.

From Aqaba, a private car or taxi to Wadi Musa takes about 1.5–2 hours (check) and costs roughly JOD 40–90 depending on vehicle and negotiation. A JETT coach link between Aqaba and Petra is sometimes listed, about 2 hours, JOD 8–10 — treat it as unconfirmed and check the timetable locally, as it is not guaranteed year-round. This is the route to choose if you are combining Petra with the Red Sea at the end of a trip.

Budget travellers can reach Wadi Musa for around JOD 10–11 from Amman on the coach, or less on a minibus if the timing works. Couples and small groups often find a private transfer better value once the per-person coach fare and a taxi to the station are added up. Solo travellers pay the most per head for a private car.

On top of transport, count the Jordan Pass if you are visiting Petra — it bundles the visa fee and the site ticket, and it must be bought before arrival. Petra by Night is a separate ticket. Everything below is a 2026 estimate; treat it as a band, not a quote.

Wadi Musa is a small town built on a slope, and most hotels cluster along the road down to the site entrance. Ask your hotel whether they will meet you at the coach drop-off — it saves a stiff walk with bags. In winter, Petra's gates close around 16:00, so an afternoon arrival leaves no time for the site that day; in summer you have until about 18:00 (check).

Friday is the main weekend day in Jordan, and minibus services thin out or stop after mid-afternoon. If your arrival lands on a Friday, lean towards the coach or a private car. Mobile data helps for maps and app-based taxis, and an eSIM set up before you fly avoids hunting for a SIM in Amman.
