Petersfield
Give Petersfield one night, or a half-day stop on the Waterloo–Portsmouth line: the town centre is 20 minutes on foot, and the South Downs walks need a full day.
Petersfield is a small market town at the western end of the South Downs, about 1 h 10 min by train from London Waterloo and 30 min from Portsmouth. The centre is compact and walkable, with a physic garden, a small museum and a market square. Most travellers use it as a base for South Downs walking, Uppark or Butser Ancient Farm rather than for the town itself.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk: the station to The Square is about 10 min on foot. Local buses (Stagecoach) link the town with Havant, Winchester, Alton, Chichester and Midhurst; a National Express coach to London calls once daily. National Cycle Route 22 and the Shipwrights Way pass through town. For Uppark, Butser and the South Downs trailheads you need a car, a taxi or a long walk.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Rural buses are infrequent, especially on Sundays: check the last return before you set out.
- Some country pubs are cash only: carry a little cash.
- The South Downs Way passes about 6 km south of town, not through it: plan the walk from the trailhead, not the High Street.
- Heath Lake boat hire is seasonal and weather-dependent: check before travelling.
A low-crime market town; the real risks are rural roads with no pavement, fast A3 traffic and wet, muddy footpaths in winter. Standard UK advice applies: 999 or 112 in an emergency, 111 for NHS non-urgent.
