Peterborough is a cathedral city and East Coast Main Line stop, 46–80 min from London King's Cross. The historic core is compact and walkable; the New Town districts around it are residential and hold little for a visitor. Most people see it in a day, or use it as a cheaper base for Cambridge, Ely and Stamford.

Get around
The centre is pedestrianised and step-free from the station underpass to Cathedral Square, about 10 min on foot. Local buses run from the bus station (200 yards east of the railway station) to Orton, Paston and Bretton. Taxis wait at the station. There is a good cycle and footpath network along the Nene. Flag Fen, Sacrewell and Castor Hanglands sit outside the centre: go by car or taxi, or take a bus and walk the last stretch.

- The station-to-centre route uses a pedestrian underpass; it is lit but quiet late at night.
- New Town districts (Bretton, Orton, Paston) are residential with no visitor sights — do not book there expecting a walkable base.
