Peterborough
Go only if you like rail history: one night, half a day at Steamtown, then drive on. Without a car, skip it — buses run four days a week.
Peterborough is a small mid-north South Australian town (population about 1,500) that existed for its railways. It was a narrow-gauge crossroads where lines from Adelaide, Broken Hill, Quorn and Terowie met, and the roundhouse and locomotive sheds survive as Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre. The town itself is quiet: one main street, a handful of cafés and motels, and long, flat wheat-country horizons. It works as a single night on the Barrier Highway between Adelaide and Broken Hill, or as a deliberate stop for rail and industrial-history travellers. It is not a base for the Flinders Ranges or the Outback — those are separate trips with their own driving distances.

Get around
You need a car. The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes, but Steamtown, the caravan park and the motels are spread along the highway and there is no local bus. Fuel up in town before heading north or south — the next reliable stops are a long way off.
See and do

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are large and mobile coverage is patchy outside town: download offline maps and carry water.
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C; do the rail centre in the morning.
- Fuel and food options thin out after town; fill up and buy supplies before you leave.
- Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk — kangaroos and emus on the Barrier Highway.
- Steamtown tour times and the Sound and Light Show can change: check ahead before you drive in.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk. Tell someone your route if you are heading into the Outback.
