Peterborough
Peterborough, New Hampshire
Give Peterborough one full day and one night: walk the Main Street blocks, then climb Mount Monadnock (about 20 min south) on the same trip.
Peterborough is a small New England town of about 6,300 people at the crossroads of Routes 101 and 202, roughly 1 h 30 min from Boston and 40 min from Keene. The compact brick downtown is walkable in an hour; the real draw is Mount Monadnock, one of the most-climbed mountains in the world, plus summer theatre and a folk-dance night. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop on a Monadnock Region loop rather than a multi-day base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Cunningham Pond beach is residents-only; parking without a sticker can get your car towed. Use the free MacDowell Dam recreation area instead.
- Mount Monadnock weather turns fast above treeline: carry water, a layer and a headlamp, and start before noon.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the mountain and on back roads; download an offline map.
- Many kitchens close by 21:00 and some places shut on Mondays and Tuesdays: check hours the same day.
Very safe for a small US town: the real risks are mountain weather, deer on the roads at dusk and winter ice. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
