Penzance is the most south-westerly town in mainland Britain and the transport hub of the Penwith peninsula: the railway terminus, the bus interchange and the ferry port for the Isles of Scilly. It is a working granite town rather than a resort, so beds cost less than in St Ives and you get a promenade, a harbour, an Art Deco seawater lido and a strong folk-music and festival calendar. Most travellers use it as a base for day trips rather than as a destination in itself.

Walk: the centre, harbour and promenade are compact, and Newlyn is about an hour on foot.
