Penryn
Sleep in Penryn only if you want cheaper beds next to Falmouth: 1 night, 10 min by train to Falmouth's harbour, 20 min to Truro.
Penryn is a small former port and university town on the Penryn River, 10 minutes by train from Falmouth and about 20 from Truro. It is a practical, cheaper bed base for the Falmouth area rather than a sightseeing destination: one small museum, a riverside cafe cluster at Jubilee Wharf, a brewpub and a taproom. Give it one night, or use it as a half-day between Falmouth and Truro.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Narrow pavements and a steep drop to the river along Commercial Road; watch for traffic at the bridge.
- Some buses and services are seasonal or reduced on Sundays: check times before you rely on a late connection.
- Book Falmouth-area beds well ahead for July and August; prices and availability move fast.
- Coastal paths and quarry-edge activities need proper shoes; weather turns quickly.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are dark riverside paths, fast traffic on the A39 approach and cold water along the coast. Standard UK precautions apply.
