Penmaenpool
Pwll Penmaen
Stay 1 night, or pass through in 2 hours: the toll bridge, the estuary path and one pub are the whole village. Base in Dolgellau and drive over.
Penmaenpool is a hamlet of a few dozen houses on the Mawddach estuary in Gwynedd, inside Snowdonia National Park, 3 miles west of Dolgellau on the A493. There is no railway station and no shop. People come for the 1879 wooden toll bridge, the flat Mawddach Trail along the old railway line, and the RSPB viewing point in the old signal box. It is a half-day stop or a quiet one-night base, not a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No shop, no cash machine and patchy mobile signal: bring what you need from Dolgellau.
- The toll bridge charges a small cash fee per car; check the current amount and hours before you cross.
- The estuary is tidal mud and fast water: do not walk out on it.
- Narrow A493 with walkers and cyclists on the verge; drive slowly and pass wide.
- Midges near the water on still summer evenings.
Very low crime; the real risks are the tidal estuary, the narrow A493 with no pavement in places, and weather that turns on the fells above the village.
