Peninsula
Peninsula, Ohio
Go for one day, not a base: park at the CVSR depot, ride the train or bike the Towpath, eat on Main St, leave before dark.
Peninsula is a village of about 565 people inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park, 20-30 min by car from Akron or Cleveland's southern suburbs. It is a trailhead with a Main Street attached: the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and the park's Boston Mill visitor centre are all here. One full day covers it; a second night only makes sense if you are riding the train both ways or skiing at Boston Mills/Brandywine in winter.

Get around
A car is the practical default: SR 303 runs east-west through the village, Riverview Road runs toward Akron, and SR 8 borders the east side. I-80 (Ohio Turnpike) crosses the area but has no Peninsula exit. Inside the village you walk; for the park you drive to a trailhead or ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad between stations.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- I-80 has no exit in Peninsula: leave at an adjacent interchange and come in on SR 303 or Riverview Road.
- Towpath and park trails flood or turn to ice after heavy rain or a freeze: check park conditions before a long ride.
- Parking at the depot and Main Street fills on fall weekends and during CVSR event trains; arrive before mid-morning.
- Cell signal is patchy in the valley; download offline maps before you drive in.
Low-risk small-town park area. The real hazards are road and trail: deer and cyclists at dusk, ice on the towpath in winter, and heat on exposed trail in July and August.
