Penedo
Go for 2 nights midweek if you want waterfalls, forest walks and Finnish-Brazilian food; skip it on a weekend in high season unless you book ahead.
Penedo is a small settlement in Rio de Janeiro state, founded by Finnish immigrants in 1929 and sitting beside Itatiaia National Park. It is a cool-weather hill base for waterfalls, short trails and chocolate shops, about 165 km from Rio by the Via Dutra motorway. Two nights covers the waterfalls and one peak walk; most visitors come by car.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the waterfalls and Pico do Penedinho sit on a hill road a few kilometres from the centre, and buses do not run there. Taxis and app rides exist but are limited, especially at night. The town core itself is small enough to walk. Horse riding and mountain biking are offered locally.

Scams and watch-outs
- Waterfall rocks are slippery even when the water is low; a head strike can be fatal. Wear grippy shoes and do not jump onto wet rock.
- Leafcutter ants nest along the Pico do Penedinho trail and bite hard; close trouser cuffs at the ankle and keep moving past nests.
- Pico do Penedinho is on private land: get a permission ticket at the chocolate house first, then drive about 1 km to the trailhead.
- On the Via Dutra, overtake on the left only; speed cameras are active and limits change between sections.
- Animals cross the 10 km access road from the motorway exit to town, especially at dusk.
Penedo is a small, low-crime resort town; the real risks are wet waterfall rock, ants on the trail, and the Via Dutra drive. Keep valuables out of sight in the car and avoid the motorway after dark.
