Pendleton
Pendleton, Oregon
Give Pendleton one night, or two if you want the Round-Up, Tamástslikt and the underground tour without rushing.
Pendleton is a small Eastern Oregon town on I-84, about 3.5 hours by car from Portland, and the cultural centre of the region. Old Town is a National Register historic district, the Umatilla reservation runs the Tamástslikt institute and Wildhorse casino 15 minutes east, and the Round-Up rodeo fills every bed in September. Most travellers pass through in a night; two nights covers the town and the reservation sites properly.

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 8 km (5 mi) and the reservation sites are outside town. Kayak Public Transit, run by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla, links downtown stops, Walmart, Arrowhead Travel Plaza and Wildhorse, and also runs the local in-town shuttle. Grant County People Mover connects to Walla Walla and, with a transfer at Monument, toward John Day and Bend on limited days. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and do the underground tour or museums at midday.
- Round-Up week in September sells out the whole town months ahead and doubles room rates.
- The Chinese tunnel story behind the underground tour is disputed by historians; treat it as entertainment, not archaeology.
- Interstate exits 207, 209, 210 and 216 are easy to mix up; check which one your hotel is on before you drive.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the reservation and toward the Blue Mountains.
Pendleton is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat, deer and trucks on US-395 at dusk, and driving back from Walla Walla wineries after tasting.
