Pendine
Pentywyn
Go for one night for the sands and the speed museum; skip as a base — buses are thin and the nearest rail station is 8 miles away.
Pendine is a small Carmarthenshire village on a long beach that once hosted land-speed record runs. There is a museum, a cafe and holiday-park beds; everything else is a short drive. Come for the sand and the story, not for a week of sightseeing.

- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off

- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses are infrequent and stop early; check the last service before you book.
- The beach is tidal and used by vehicles — keep clear of cars and check tide times.
- Many cafes and attractions close out of season; check opening before travelling.
- Mobile signal is patchy along the sands.
A quiet village; the real risks are the tide, beach traffic and unlit lanes at night. Keep to the path and check tide times before walking the sands.
