Peja
Pejë / Peć
Add 1–2 nights to a Kosovo trip for Peja and the Rugova canyon: the city itself is a half-day walk, the valley needs a full day for hiking or via ferrata.
Peja sits at the mouth of the Rugova canyon, a 25 km gash in the Accursed Mountains. The old bazaar, Ottoman mosques and the Ethnographic Museum fill a morning; the canyon, via ferrata and the Dečani monastery (UNESCO) need a second day. Most travellers use Peja as a mountain base for 1–2 nights.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'mirëdita'; avoid: Assuming people speak Serbian
- Hospitality: Accept coffee or tea; avoid: Declining every invitation
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring sweets; avoid: Pointing feet at people
- Conversation: Ask about the diaspora, food, football; avoid: Telling people what their country is
- US and UK: Expect warmth toward Americans and Britons (Bill Clinton and Tony Blair have streets); avoid: Mocking that gratitude
Scams and watch-outs
- Visoki Dečani monastery: you must surrender your passport at the KFOR guard post; no shorts or sleeveless tops.
- Via ferrata and hiking: go with a guide from Rugova Experience or Balkan Natural Adventure; the terrain is serious.
- Last buses to Pristina leave around 18:00; check the schedule at the bus station.
- Some restaurants in the bazaar close by 22:00; eat early.
Peja is safe for tourists. The main risks are uneven pavement in the old bazaar, summer heat, and the serious terrain of the via ferrata and mountain hikes: always go with a guide.
