Pegnitz
Skip Pegnitz unless you need a quiet base for Upper Franconia breweries or a stop on the Nuremberg–Bayreuth rail line: half a day covers the medieval centre and a brewery visit.
Pegnitz is a small Upper Franconian town where the river of the same name rises. Its entire preserved medieval centre is a listed ensemble, anchored by a 1347 town hall. Most travellers use it as a rail stop or a cheap base for exploring Bayreuth, Bamberg and the Franconian Switzerland region. The draw is quiet streets, a ruined castle and family-run brewpubs — not sights that demand a full day.
