Pécs
Give Pécs 2 nights: one full day for the Old Town and Early Christian tombs, a half-day for the Zsolnay quarter. Skip it if you only have 3 nights in Hungary.
Pécs is Hungary's fifth-largest city and the seat of Baranya County, on the southern slopes of the Mecsek hills about 200 km from Budapest. It packs four layers into a walkable core: Roman Sopianae and its 4th-century necropolis (UNESCO), a cathedral founded around 1009, Ottoman mosques still in use as churches, and the Zsolnay ceramics quarter. It is a university city of about 148,000 with roughly 20,000 students, so it feels lived-in rather than staged. Two nights covers the core; add a third for Szigetvár or Harkány.

The core is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Buses fill the gaps to the Zsolnay quarter and the TV tower; buy tickets at kiosks rather than from the driver, and validate them — inspectors fine on the spot. Bolt, Volán and Euro Taxi all operate.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Jó napot, handshake; avoid: First names with elders
- Names: Family name first when written; avoid: Assuming the second name is the surname
- Toasts: Eye contact; avoid: Clinking beer glasses with older people
- History: Listen; avoid: Joking about Trianon or 1956
- Home visit: Shoes off; flowers or wine; avoid: Refusing food repeatedly
Scams and watch-outs
- Validate your bus ticket; inspectors fine tourists without warning.
- Many museums close on Mondays and switch to shorter winter hours (Nov–Mar) — check before you go.
- The TV tower and some sights sit up in the Mecsek hills: allow travel time, not just visit time.
- Pécs is not on a main international rail line; most cross-border trips route through Budapest.
Pécs is a calm, low-risk city; the real annoyances are bus-ticket fines, uneven pavements in the Old Town and pickpockets around Széchenyi tér on market days.
