Pecos
Give Pecos one full day: Pecos National Historical Park in the morning, NM 63 up the river in the afternoon. Sleep in Santa Fe unless you want the mountains.
Pecos is a village of about 1,400 people on the Pecos River, at the southern end of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, roughly 20 miles east of Santa Fe off I-25. Almost everything visitors come for is outside the village: the pueblo and mission ruins at Pecos National Historical Park two miles south, and the Pecos Wilderness up NM 63 to the north. It works as a half-day or one-day stop from Santa Fe, or as a quiet mountain base if you want river and trail access.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains: start hikes early and be off exposed ridges by midday.
- Altitude: the village is around 2,100 m and NM 63 climbs higher; give yourself a day before hard hiking.
- Fishing access along the Pecos River crosses private land: stay on public stretches and posted easements.
- The Glorieta Pass battlefield trail is on private land behind a gate: get directions and the access code at the park visitor center first.
- Cell coverage is patchy up NM 63; download maps before you leave the interstate.
Low-crime rural New Mexico; the real risks are mountain weather, altitude, wildlife and long empty drives. Carry water, tell someone your trail plan, and don't leave valuables visible in a parked car at trailheads.
