Peachland
Give Peachland one night, not a base: a beach-and-waterfall stop on Highway 97 between Kelowna (25 km) and Penticton (40 km).
Peachland is a small Okanagan lake town of about 5,400 people, built into a south-facing mountainside above Okanagan Lake. It is a half-day of beach, a short waterfall walk and a zipline, plus a handful of places to eat. Most travellers pass through on Highway 97 or stop one night between Kelowna and Penticton; the town has no hospital and few beds, so plan around Kelowna for services.

- West Kelowna (25 km north)
- More beds and lower summer rates; use Peachland as a day stop.
Language
English is the working language in most of Canada; French dominates Québec and parts of New Brunswick and Ontario. Québec's language law (Bill 96) makes French the language of signs, menus and services; a 'Bonjour' first earns goodwill, and in Montréal most people switch to English easily.
- Metric system: km, °C, litres — but people often give heights in feet.
- 'Eh', 'toque' (winter hat), 'loonie' and 'toonie' (CAD 1 and 2 coins), 'double-double' (coffee with two cream, two sugar).
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- The nearest hospital is in Kelowna, about 25 km north; call 911 for emergencies.
- Beach Avenue parking fills by mid-morning on summer weekends.
- Highway 97 is the only through road: summer roadworks and weekend traffic add time.
- Lake water is cold in June; the beach at Antler's is rocky, not sand.
- Wildfire smoke can hit the valley in July–August: check air quality before booking outdoor plans.
Very low street crime; the real risks are highway driving, summer wildfire smoke and cold lake water.
