Patras is Greece's third-largest city and the western gateway to the Peloponnese: ferries from Italy dock here, and trains and buses run to Athens and the coast. The centre is compact and walkable, the archaeology is good, and the February–March Carnival is the biggest in Greece. Most travellers pass through in a night; two nights covers the sights without rushing.
