Give Patong 3 nights if you want beach plus nightlife; 1 night is enough if you only want Bangla Road and move on to quieter beaches.
Patong is Phuket's biggest beach resort: a 3 km beach, a dense strip of hotels and restaurants, and the nightlife cluster around Soi Bangla. It is the busiest and most expensive beach on the island, with the widest choice of beds and the easiest transport links. Come for convenience and nightlife; go elsewhere on Phuket for quiet.

Get around
The centre is walkable: Beach Road to Nanai Road is about 10–15 minutes on foot. Songthaew-style minivans and tuk-tuks have no meter, so agree the fare before you get in; short hops commonly run about ฿200, but drivers set their own prices and the figure varies. Motorbike taxis start around ฿40–100. Renting a scooter is common but risky without a licence and helmet.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A wai (palms together, slight bow) to return a greeting; a smile and nod for shop staff; avoid: Waiing children or service staff first — it confuses; hugging strangers
- Head and feet: Keep feet on the floor, sit with legs folded to the side in temples; avoid: Touching heads (even children's), pointing feet, stepping over people or food
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees, shoes off, sit lower than monks; avoid: Women touching monks or handing them things directly; climbing Buddha images
- Monarchy: Stand for the royal anthem in cinemas and at 08:00 and 18:00 in public places; avoid: Any joke or comment about the royal family; stepping on a banknote
- Keeping calm: Stay polite and smiling when things go wrong ('jai yen' — cool heart); avoid: Raising your voice; public anger loses the argument
- Names: Khun plus first name ('Khun Somchai'); nicknames are normal; avoid: Using the family name alone

Scams and watch-outs
- Jet-ski rental disputes are a known scam on Phuket: damage claims can run into tens of thousands of baht. Do not hand over your passport as deposit.
- Agree every taxi or tuk-tuk fare before boarding; there is no meter in the minivans.
- Do not buy counterfeit goods; they can be confiscated at the airport.
- Rip currents in the monsoon months (roughly May–Oct): swim between the flags and follow lifeguard warnings.
- The sex industry is visible around Soi Bangla; expect touts and keep valuables out of sight at night.
Patong is busy and generally safe by day; the real risks are traffic, unmarked taxi fares and rip currents in the wet season. Do not rent a jet-ski: damage-claim disputes are a known scam and there is no insurance. Keep your passport in the hotel safe and agree prices before you commit.
