Pathankot
ਪਠਾਨਕੋਟ
Treat Pathankot as a rail and bus junction, not a destination: one night before the hills, or skip it and push on to Amritsar or Dharamsala.
Pathankot sits where the Punjab plains meet the Shivalik foothills, and it works as a transfer point for Dharamsala, Dalhousie, Jammu and the Vaishno Devi route. The city itself is a market town with a ruined fort, a narrow-gauge mountain railway and cheap Punjabi food. Most travellers sleep one night, or change trains and leave.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Namaste (palms together) or a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers
- Hands and feet: Give and eat with the right hand; apologise if your foot touches someone; avoid: Pointing feet at people or shrines; touching books or food with your feet
- Temples: Shoes off, walk clockwise around shrines, accept prasad (blessed food) with the right hand; avoid: Leather in Jain temples; entering sanctums that say Hindus only
- Home visit: Bring sweets or fruit; accept tea at least once; avoid: Refusing all food; wearing shoes inside
- Questions: Expect personal questions (married? job? salary?) as friendliness; avoid: Taking offence; answer vaguely if you prefer
- Saying no: A firm, polite 'nahi, dhanyavaad' (no, thank you) and keep walking; avoid: Long explanations to touts
- Dress: Loose clothes covering shoulders and knees; kurta tops are cheap and cool; avoid: Swimwear or shorts away from Goa beaches
Scams and watch-outs
- Traffic at Gandhi Chowk and the Dhangu Road level crossing is heavy and signals are widely ignored — cross with care.
- Petty theft happens around the railway stations; keep bags zipped and in front of you.
- Touts at the station and bus stand offer 'help' with tickets and hotels; buy at the counter instead.
- Large parts of the city are army land — do not photograph military camps or checkpoints.
Violent crime is rare and the city is mostly safe by day. The real risks are traffic, station pickpockets and touts; women travelling alone should arrive before dark and pick a hotel on Dhangu Road rather than a station lodge.
