Pathanamthitta is a countryside district headquarters in Kerala's Central Travancore belt, on the Achankovil river and the edge of the Western Ghats. It is the staging town for Sabarimala, Kerala's largest pilgrimage, and for the Maramon Convention, Asia's largest Christian gathering. The town has no railway station and no beach; you come for temples, churches, rubber and forest, or you pass through on the way to them.

- The district gets very heavy monsoon rain; hill and forest roads can be disrupted in Jun–Aug.
