Paternoster
Go for 1–2 nights as a West Coast stop between Cape Town and Langebaan: walk the Old Town, eat crayfish, sleep over rather than day-trip.
Paternoster is a small fishing village on the northern shore of Cape Columbine, about 120 km north of Cape Town on the R27 and R45. The Old Town runs roughly 1 km from the four-way stop to Gaatjie Restaurant, and everything — shops, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and the wine lounge — sits within walking distance. It works as a one- or two-night stop on a West Coast drive, not as a base for a longer stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello and ask how someone is before any request; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Handshakes: Three-part African handshake with friends; a normal handshake with strangers; avoid: Refusing an offered hand
- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met
- Braai invitations: Bring meat or drinks, and arrive on 'African time'; avoid: Taking over the fire
- Photos: Ask first, especially in townships and villages; avoid: Photographing children without a parent's permission
- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- The reserve gate closes to day visitors in the evening — check times before a late beach walk.
- Hiking trails (Tietiesbaai–Swartriet 17 km, Paternoster–Stompneus Bay 30 km) need a permit and have no facilities on route.
- The beach camp has no electricity; charge devices before you arrive.
- Wind and cold water on the West Coast: swimming is for the hardy, and the Benguela current is cold year-round.
Paternoster is a small village; the practical risks are cold water and strong currents, dark roads at night, and long empty stretches on the R45 after dark. Lock your car and don't leave valuables visible on the beach.
