Paterna
Skip as a base: sleep in Valencia and ride Metro line 1 out for the Torre Mudèjar and the cave quarter in half a day.
Paterna sits 5 km northwest of Valencia and reads as a suburb with a metro stop, but it holds two things Valencia does not: a 12th-century Moorish watchtower you can climb, and a hillside of cave dwellings lived in until recent decades. Both sit within a 10-minute walk of the metro. Come for half a day, or come back in late August for La Cordà, when the main street fires about 70,000 rockets in half an hour.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- La Cordà is a real pyrotechnic event: follow the town's official safety guidance and viewing arrangements for the night, and check them before you travel.
- Cave-dwelling sites are partly private homes; stay on marked paths and do not enter openings.
- Torre Mudèjar opens only Saturday and Sunday, 11:00–14:00, and is free; check current opening before you go.
- August nights are loud until the small hours during the festivities; book elsewhere if you want sleep.
Paterna is a normal, safe Valencia suburb; the real risks are heat in July–August, traffic on the technology-park roads and standing in the wrong place during La Cordà.
