Pasir Gudang
Skip Pasir Gudang as a base: half a day to one day only, for the kite festival or the Johor Circuit, otherwise sleep in Johor Bahru and day-trip.
Pasir Gudang is Johor's heavy-industry port city, 30–40 min east of Johor Bahru. Its draws are narrow and specific: a kite museum and kite park, a February kite festival, the Johor Circuit track, a crocodile farm and mangrove or fishing trips out of Kong Kong. Air quality drops when the chemical plants are busy, and there is almost nowhere to drink. Most travellers sleep in Johor Bahru and come for a half-day.

- Bus and taxi terminal, Kompleks Pusat Bandar mall and the library; practical for one night, little evening life.
- Masai
- Own bus and taxi terminal, supermarkets and cheap hotels; 10–15 min from the centre.
- Bandar Seri Alam
- Planned township with lakes, parks and the better mid-range hotels; needs a car or Grab.
- Senibong Cove
- Waterfront restaurants and marina on the Johor Bahru side; the nicest place to eat, not to sleep cheaply.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Light handshake or hand on heart; wait for women to offer a hand; avoid: Firm grips, hugging
- Pointing: Use the thumb with fingers folded; avoid: Index finger pointing
- Homes: Shoes off; avoid: Walking in with shoes
- Mosques: Covered clothes, headscarf for women; avoid: Entering during prayers
- Public affection: Keep it low-key; avoid: Kissing in public
Scams and watch-outs
- Air quality can worsen noticeably near the industrial estates, with a burning-plastic smell; people with asthma should keep medication handy.
- There is almost no nightlife and many seafood restaurants do not serve alcohol.
- Sarang Buaya and the kite museum keep short daytime hours; arrive before mid-afternoon.
- Track days at Johor Circuit alternate bikes and cars; check the calendar before travelling for it.
- Crossing to Singapore can take 1.5–3 h at peak times; build in the queue.
Low street-crime risk; the real issues are industrial air quality, fast traffic on the highways and heat. Solo travellers are fine by day, but there is little to do after dark and few taxis: keep a Grab app working.
