Partij-Wittem
Go for half a day, not a night: castle, monastery and mill sit within 1 km on the Geul; base in Gulpen or Maastricht instead.
Partij-Wittem is two hamlets, Partij and Wittem, strung along the Geul river in South Limburg, on the old Maastricht–Aachen road. Wittem Castle is now a hotel, the 18th-century Redemptorist monastery is the reason many people stop, and a working watermill sits between them. Everything is within about 1 km of the N278; the village has no station, no bike rental and few beds, so most visitors come by bus or car from Gulpen, Valkenburg or Maastricht and leave the same day.

- The N278 is a busy through-road with no real footway in places: walk the Geul side paths where you can.
