Serra da Estrela is mainland Portugal's highest ground and its largest protected area, about 1,000 km² spread over six municipalities between the Beiras. There is no gate and no ticket: you drive in on the N 339 from Covilhã or the N 232 from Manteigas, and the only real costs are a winter charge on the Torre road, ski lift passes when snow holds, and guided activities. Torre at 1,993 m is a car park with a tower, a chapel and a small shopping centre on top, and in August it fills; the walking that justifies the trip is lower down, in the Zêzere glacial valley above Manteigas, where a marked trail climbs to the cirque below the summit in three to five hours. The mountain economy still runs on sheep, the cão da Serra da Estrela guard dog and queijo Serra da Estrela, made in the villages on the western slopes. Snow closes the summit road in winter, fire risk closes forest tracks in summer, and both are worth checking the morning you set out.

Accessibility
- The Torre summit is reachable by car with a short, mostly level walk from the car park.
- Manteigas town and the lower Zêzere valley roads are easy by car; the valley trail itself is rocky and not suitable for wheelchairs.
- Penhas da Saúde has paved access to hotel entrances.
Visiting lightly
- Buy queijo Serra da Estrela and other produce from farms and village shops so the mountain economy keeps working.
- Stay on marked trails; the high plateau vegetation is slow to recover.
- Take rubbish down from the summit area, where bins overflow in August.
- Use the shuttle or share cars on busy August weekends to limit parking pressure at Torre.

What are the best hikes in Serra da Estrela Natural Park?
The Zêzere glacial valley trail from Manteigas is the classic, 3–5 hours, moderate. The N 231 ridge above Loriga is quieter and similar in effort. The Torre summit is a short walk from the car park rather than a hike.
When is the best time to visit Serra da Estrela Natural Park?
May, June, September and October. Trails are dry, the air is clear and Torre is not yet crowded. July and August are hot and busy at the summit; December to March brings snow, road closures and the short ski season.
Do I need a car?
Yes for the summit and most trailheads. Buses reach Covilhã, Seia, Gouveia and Manteigas, but the Torre road and the valley trails have no useful public transport.
Can I ski in Portugal?
Yes, at the Serra da Estrela ski area above Penhas da Saúde, Portugal's only resort. Snow is unreliable and the season is short, so check conditions before booking.
