Osceola National Forest is a working flatwoods forest, not a park with a gate: no entrance fee, no visitor centre on the main road, and no lodging. What it does have is the Olustee Battlefield site, the Florida National Scenic Trail crossing it on flat ground, and Ocean Pond, a 1,760-acre lake with a 67-site campground, beach and boat ramp. Most travellers use it as a half-day stop between Lake City and Jacksonville, or as a cheap camping base in the cool months. From mid-November to early January, general gun season restricts all camping to nine designated hunt camps and Ocean Pond, and summer heat, storms and mosquitoes make June to September the wrong window for walking.

Accessibility
- The Olustee Depot visitor centre and battlefield site are reached by car with short, mostly level walks.
- Ocean Pond Campground has drive-up sites and flush toilets; the beach and boat ramp are close to parking.
- Forest trails are sand and dirt, often soft or flooded; not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers after rain.

How much does it cost to enter Osceola National Forest?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee for the national forest or for the Olustee Battlefield state park site, except during the February reenactment. You pay only if you camp: Ocean Pond Campground runs about $8–18 a night, and the Landing Group Area is $50 per 24 hours by reservation.
What are the best hikes in Osceola National Forest?
The short Olustee Battlefield loop is the easiest introduction. For a longer walk, take a section of the Florida National Scenic Trail, which crosses the forest on flat ground with a first-come primitive shelter. Big Gum Swamp Wilderness is the wildest option, on foot only, with mud and little signage.
When is the best time to visit Osceola National Forest?
November to March: dry, cool and comfortable, with average daily temperatures around 10–22°C. June to September is hot, humid and stormy, with mosquitoes and flooded trails. Note that general gun hunting season runs mid-November to early January, when camping is limited to designated hunt camps and Ocean Pond.
Do I need a pass or permit?
No pass is needed to drive in or walk. Camping at Ocean Pond is paid on site, primitive camping is free outside hunting season, and the Landing Group Area must be reserved through the Olustee Depot visitor information centre. A national park pass does not apply here because this is Forest Service land.
Can I camp anywhere in the forest?
