Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument protects the northernmost large stand of organ pipe cactus in the United States, on 1,336 km² (516 sq mi) of Sonoran Desert that runs straight into the Mexico border at Lukeville. Saguaro is actually more common here than organ pipe, and the density of cacti is higher than in most Southwest desert parks. It is a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1976, and the only practical way in is by car on AZ 85 between Ajo and the border. The backcountry has been closed indefinitely for border-security reasons, so a visit means the visitor centre, the 21-mile Ajo Mountain Drive, the Estes Canyon – Bull Pasture hike and the two campgrounds — a half day to a full day, not a multi-day wilderness trip.
