Visit as part of a multi-day Saharan Chad tour from N'Djamena: the dry months November–February are the only practical window, and you need a 4WD, a guide and a permit; the lakes are free to enter but the logistics cost 500,000–1,500,000 XAF (about 800–2,500 USD) per person for a 5–7 day trip.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Central Africa ↗Sort the visa before the flight: none of the seven countries reliably issues tourist visas on arrival to Western passports, and e-visas here are tied to named airports.
  • Central Africa ↗Carry the original yellow fever vaccination certificate in your hand luggage; health desks at every Central African airport ask for it, and a missing card can mean refusal or a jab at the desk.
  • Central Africa ↗Before booking anything in or near the DRC, read the WHO Ebola situation page and your own government's health notice: the 2026 outbreak brought quarantine and boarding rules for people who have been in the DRC.
  • Chad ↗Check your own government travel advice for Chad before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Chad ↗Apply for any Chadian visa only through evisa.td, and check whether your passport can get one at all; travel outside N'Djamena needs permits.
  • Chad ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Chad before you rely on it.

Lakes of Ounianga is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the hyper-arid Sahara of Chad: 18 permanent desert lakes, including hypersaline Lake Yoa with its floating reed islands, sustained by fossil groundwater. The site has no entrance fee, no facilities and no public transport; the only way to visit is a multi-day 4WD tour from N'Djamena, costing 500,000–1,500,000 XAF per person, and the practical window is November–February when days are cool and migratory birds are present.

Why go

  • A chain of 18 permanent desert lakes in the hyper-arid Sahara, a geological anomaly that has survived for millennia.
  • Lake Yoa's hypersaline water and its floating reed islands create a landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth.
  • The lakes are a critical stop for migratory birds crossing the Sahara, including flamingos and ducks in winter.
  • The isolation means you will have the site almost to yourself; tourism numbers are in the low hundreds per year.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The site is remote and requires 4WD travel over sand and rock; no wheelchair access.
  • Walking distances are short at each lake but the ground is uneven sand and gravel.

Visiting lightly

  • Tourism is minimal; the main impact is from tour vehicles. Choose operators who use established tracks and carry out all waste.
  • Do not disturb the bird colonies; keep a distance of at least 50 m from nesting areas.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Lakes of Ounianga?

There is no official entrance fee as of 2026 (check). The real cost is the tour: 500,000–1,500,000 XAF (about 800–2,500 USD) per person for a 5–7 day trip from N'Djamena, including 4WD, guide, fuel, food and camping.

What are the best hikes in Lakes of Ounianga?
