  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
  • West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.

For some areas

Kainji National Park is one of Nigeria's largest protected areas, covering over 5,000 km² across three distinct units: the Kainji Lake reservoir, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. Established in 1978 by merging existing game reserves, it is managed by the Federal National Park Service. The landscape is dominated by Guinea savanna grassland, scattered with streams, waterfalls, and inselbergs. It serves as a critical Lion Conservation Unit and hosts diverse wildlife including elephants, buffalo, hippos, Nile crocodiles, and over 340 bird species. Unlike southern parks, it offers a remote, self-sufficient experience requiring careful planning for access and safety.

Where to stay

Near the park

In the park

Park camping ground

Camping inside the park with your own tent and supplies; facilities are basic (check).

Near the park

Ilorin

A wider choice of hotels, but 5–7 hours away — useful only as a staging night.

Safety

Long, rough drives and night travel high

Drive only in daylight, use a hired car and driver, and expect checkpoints; do not plan to arrive after dark.

Malaria and other mosquito-borne illness high

Take antimalarials as advised by a travel clinic, use repellent and sleep under a net.

Heat and dehydration medium

Carry more water than you think you need; temperatures can reach about 30°C and the dry season is dusty.

Getting stuck or lost on tracks medium

Go with a ranger and a vehicle in good condition; phone coverage is patchy and can drop out entirely.

Thin emergency services medium

Carry a first-aid kit, spare fuel and cash; the nearest real hospital is far from the park.

Accessibility

  • The park office, museum and camping ground are reachable by car with short walks.
  • Game drives are the accessible option; walking trails and the lake boats are not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Hire local rangers and drivers so the park's own staff benefit from your visit.
  • Do not buy wildlife products or skins anywhere near the park.
  • Take all rubbish out; the park has almost no waste collection.
  • Keep group sizes small on boat trips to limit disturbance to hippo and birds.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Kainji National Park?

Expect roughly ₦1,000–3,000 per person for entry as a 2026 estimate, plus a vehicle and ranger fee of about ₦10,000–30,000 per day. Fees are set federally and change; confirm the current figure with the park office before you travel.

What are the best hikes in Kainji National Park?

There are no marked public trails. Walking is done as guided patrols: the Borgu savanna in the west is the usual half-day walk, and Zugurma in the southeast is a full-day, more remote option. Both need a ranger, and Zugurma needs a vehicle waiting at the end.

When is the best time to visit Kainji National Park?

December to April, in the dry season. The park itself is generally described as open from December until June. January to March gives the best game viewing as animals gather near water; the wet months from May to October make many tracks impassable.

Can I visit Kainji National Park without a guide?

No. Borgu and Zugurma are large, unsigned blocks, and visitors are expected to register and take a ranger. Arrange this through the park office, usually at Wawa, before you travel.

Where should I stay near Kainji National Park?

New Bussa, a few kilometres west of Kainji Dam, is the practical base with simple guesthouses and hotels. There is also a basic camping ground in the park, and Ilorin has more hotels but is 5–7 hours away.

Is Kainji the same as Karijini National Park?

No. Karijini is in Western Australia. Kainji is in Niger State, Nigeria, around Kainji Lake and the Borgu and Zugurma game reserves.

How do I get to Kainji National Park?

Most visitors fly or drive to Abuja, Minna or Ilorin and continue by road to New Bussa — roughly 4–5 hours from Minna, 5–7 from Ilorin and 7–9 from Abuja. Drive in daylight and hire a car and driver.
